Collection: Brooms or Besoms

The word broom refers to the broom plant which was used to make brooms.  The term besom is Old English meaning bundle of twigs or broom. These very integral household tools were needed in everyday life and even are today, for the cleaning and cleansing of floors and other surfaces.

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Many of our brooms are handmade authentically with broomcorn and in the style of the first colonists.

Besom folklore focuses on its use for cleaning and protection, symbolizing the sweeping away of negative energy and evil spirits. Hanging a broom above the entrances or hearth to a home or building brings protection to that inner space.

It's a significant tool in various traditions, from cleansing sacred spaces and performing rituals to its famous association with witches and their alleged ability to fly, rather than a literal interpretation by the superstitious, it is believed to be used as a metaphor and can be used both physically and as a visual focal tool for astral travel or "jumping the hedge".

The practice of jumping the broom is a wedding ritual symbolizing fertility, good luck, good fortune, and the blessings for a new home being created by the couple.
