Collection: December + Winter + Solstice + Yule

December is the month where the Cailleach the Goddess of Winter comes into her own.

She is called the hag of winter along with her boars she freezes the land and cares for the animals of the forest.

Anglo-Saxon name for December is "Mōdor" Month, or Mother’s month and Yule is Mothers night.

It is the season when Herne the Hunter rides the skies looking for lost souls to show the path home to the Underworld.

Dec 1st is the Meteorological first day of Winter, also called Mistletoe Day. Fun fact: Never let mistletoe touch the ground as it brings bad luck. 

 The Full Moon in December 2025 is at 4:14 pm Denver. It is called the Cold Moon also the Oak Moon. This the last Super Full Moon in 2025 and it is in Gemini which is ruled by mercury. Mercury recently went direct, and it is a time to communicate and share with others. Gemini rules pairing, polarities, and bonding. It is a time for connecting and reconciliation as now communication is flowing smoothly. 

There is a practice on the 4th of Dec to cut a small branch of a cherry tree or other blossoming tree and place it in water and it should bloom by Christmas.

 Dec 5^th is St. Nicolas Day. It is a traditional day to put up your tree.

The Roman Saturnalia was celebrated Dec 17^th through the 23^rd.

Dec 20th through the 25th ghosts begin to walk the ground.

Dec 21 is the first day of Yule and the Winter Solstice this is when the Yule log starts to burn but it has to last until Jan 5^th  so traditionally it was enormous. The Solstice heralds the Longest Night and moment when the sun begins its journey and return to us bringing longer days.

If you can’t burn a Yule log consider lighting a Yule candle, this practice symbolizes the returning light in the darkest time of the year. Consider a large red one because of its protective qualities and a 7 Day Candle will ensure it makes it until morning as letting it go out before the morning sun rise can bring bad luck for the coming year.

 Dec 22nd is the 1st day of the Sun moving into Capricorn. 

 Dec 24th is Christmas Eve this is a good night to begin the Rauhnachte a tradition from southern Bavaria, which means Smoke Night. See our Blog for more details.

 Dec 25th is Christmas a day and you may not know this but it is a good day for divination. 

New Year’s Eve 31st of December. A day for celebration of releasing the old and embracing the new. Release that which no longer serves and plan for the blessings and goals for the new year. (See Rauhnachte Blog)
