Citrine is a type of quartz, and is closely related to amethyst. The main difference between the two is the oxidation level of iron ions in the colorless quartz crystal. It can develop its yellow color through natural geothermal heating or exposure to radiation. Some citrine may have started as amethyst, but changed color due to the heat from nearby molten rock.
