Obsidian forms when felsic lava cools rapidly, preventing crystal formation. This rapid cooling results in the amorphous, glassy texture. It is commonly found in volcanic regions, often near the margins of rhyolitic lava flows. The golden sheen comes from gas bubbles aligned in the flow layers.
