Peridot is the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine, a nesosilicate, and gets its yellow-ish-green color from iron content. This transparent, orthorhombic-system crystal forms deep within the Earth's mantle and is brought to the surface through volcanic activity, though it also occurs in meteorites. Major sources are Pakistan, Brazil, Australia and the USA.
