Smoky Quartz's smoky color results from natural gamma irradiation in the Earth's crust, which activates aluminum impurities within the quartz's silicon dioxide structure to create color centers. These color centers absorb light, giving the mineral its characteristic brown to black hues. While natural irradiation causes the coloration, smoky quartz is not radioactive itself, and the color can be artificially restored by re-irradiating faded or heated stones
