A Ruby centers on corundum (aluminum oxide), a mineral that turns red due to the presence of the element chromium, with traces of iron, titanium, and other elements also contributing to its color and properties. Formed under intense heat and pressure in metamorphic and igneous rocks, rubies are essentially colored sapphires, as both are varieties of corundum.
