Serpentine involves its formation from peridotite through a process called serpentinization, its unique mineral composition of magnesium silicate minerals, and its role in Earth and planetary science. his metamorphic rock is formed by hydration, where water reacts with iron- and magnesium-rich igneous rocks like peridotite from the Earth's mantle, a process that also generates hydrogen gas. The rock's science is relevant to fields like astrobiology, due to the unique microbial life that can thrive in serpentinizing environments, and environmental science, for its potential to sequester carbon dioxide.
