Shungite was made through a natural geological process about two billion years ago when rich organic-rich sediments containing ancient microorganisms underwent metamorphism. This process transformed the material into a unique carbonaceous rock, with the specific conditions creating its unusual structure, including the presence of fullerenes. Shungite deposits are primarily found in the Karelia region of northwestern Russia.
