Sodalite is a blue-violet mineral with a cubic crystal structure, scientifically known as a sodium aluminum silicate chloride. It is a tectosilicate, part of the feldspathoid group, and forms in igneous rocks that are low in silicon and aluminum, such as nepheline syenites. Its scientific importance lies in its unique cage-like framework structure, which can trap molecules, and its fluorescent properties, which have been studied for applications like removing radioactive waste.
