Sunstone is scientifically identified as a type of plagioclase feldspar that displays a "schiller" effect due to tiny inclusions of copper and hematite. This optical phenomenon, known as aventurescence, causes a glittering, reddish-gold sheen. Separately, the term "sunstone" also refers to Iceland spar, a type of calcite used for polarized light navigation, where its birefringence can be used to find the sun's position on overcast days.
