Tiger Eye is based on the geological process where the mineral crocidolite (a form of asbestos) is replaced by quartz, forming a pseudomorph. The stone's signature shimmering effect, called chatoyancy, is caused by the light reflecting off the remaining, microscopic fibrous structure of the original crocidolite, which has been encapsulated by the quartz.
