Watermelon Tourmaline is a variety of the mineral elbaite, a type of tourmaline, that forms with a pink core and green outer layer due to changes in the geothermal fluid during its crystal growth. The pink color is caused by the presence of manganese, while the green color is caused by iron. This color zoning is concentric, forming from the crystal's center outwards.
